New Zealand Earth Quake
On Thursday, March 1, 2012 an earth quake shook the people of Wellington, New Zealand. Anglican church officials say an iconic cathedral in downtown Chirstchurch must be demolished because the earth quakes damage is beyond repair. Chirstchurch is one of the cities best known building. Its climbable spire collapsed on February 2011 earth quake that killed 185 people and destroyed many other downtown buildings. Officials thought part of the building could be saved, but they said Friday aftershocks caused even more damage. Bishop Matthews said the new cathedral will have a different design and cost an estimate of fifty-million New Zealand dollars ($42 million). She says up to ten feet (3 meters) will be kept from the existing cathedral, possibly for the use of a prayer garden. Massive reconstruction work estimated to cost more than $11.5 billion is under way after February's earth quakes in Chirstchurch, New Zealand.
